Nerd to alpha male3/1/2024 ![]() Evolutionary psychology is frequently used to justify certain behaviors in men and women, insisting that certain behaviors are not only natural but inevitable and thus are the way that things are supposed to be. It’s tempting to ascribe behaviors to “nature” as a way to give the the gloss of authority and excuse one’s desires with “we’ll, this is just how it’s supposed to be, can’t do nuthin’ about it.” But if one is going to attempt this, it helps to actually understand what the real natural behavior is instead of making assumptions based on what we WANT to be true and ultimately begging the question. The problem, unfortunately, is that the cultish worship of “alpha” is incredibly toxic, poisoning interactions between men and women and actually making it harder for men to improve their dating lives. The idea of the “high-value, alpha male” is a popular one – in fact, it’s one of the regular arguments in the comments sections, especially whenever I post about masculinity or what makes men attractive to women. “Attention ladies! My body is ready! Please form an orderly line!” According to the standard script, women are attracted to “alphas” because they are looking for prime genetic material who can also protect and provide for them, thus ensuring the continuation of their genetic line. More often than not, it gets mixed in with evolutionary psychology – the idea that men and women act a specific way because of evolution. It’s not terribly surprising (to me) to see that the idea of “being alpha” is continuing to be tossed around as the end-all/be-all of dating it’s a part of the DNA of men’s dating advice – the complaints of Nice Guys lamenting the popularity of assholes, nerds complaining about jocks getting all the girls and of course, the obsession in PUA circles with status games and “shit tests” – that is, acting in such a manner as to “test” a man’s status by trying to make him supplicate or otherwise disqualify a man from being a potential sexual partner. All hail the nerd, the new alpha male.Every once in a while, I like to go browse through some various blogs, forums and subreddits specializing in men’s dating advice to see what theories are being espoused. You’ll have to hold your own in the intellectual department at the company cocktail party.Īll hail Edgar, Carlton, Milton and Poindexter. Sure looks will still hold the nerd’s primary gaze, but that alone won’t be enough. The nerdy girl is swiftly gaining respect and reverence from her male intellectual equal, because big brains are more of a genetic benefit than big boobs and biceps. Biff will still get his opportunity to sow his wild oats, but those seeds may more frequently fall on barren soil as savvy women who seek to build legacies for their offspring save the gift of motherhood for the geeks and nerds.īut women aren’t out of the woods either. As I mentioned human evolution hasn’t nearly caught up with the technology innovations of man. Now does that mean Biff is S.O.L.? Will he be regulated to the sidelines like the lowly nerds of old? Not too soon. They’re here, and they have the power now, so Biff better take a step back and make room for Benjamin, because he’s the guy that has all the “Benjamins.” Now more than ever, it’s clear that the meek can (and will) inherit the earth. And the (mostly) men behind all this change are most likely the guys in science club you ignored, the chess club champions you rebuffed, and the bespectacled book toters who spent their lunch hour in the library. Virtually every task that requires physical labor can be completely automated. That strong arm used to throw spears to bring home dinner on the open plains has been replaced with grocery stores and automated checkout machines. We no longer need protection from lions tigers and bears. ![]() For millennia, the tall, musclebound man with the square jaw and proclivity to spread his seed all over creation may soon be coming to an end before human evolution has a chance to catch up.
